Hong Kong homes generally do not have very high ceilings, usually around 2.4 to 2.8 metres. Together with small living areas, low ceilings and compact spaces can make a home feel oppressive, which is a tricky issue in interior design. In fact, if you want to enhance the visual effect, apart from paying attention to the design, lighting can also help—ceiling lights (surface-mounted lights). You may have heard a lot about chandeliers and LED lights, but what exactly is a ceiling light? HKDecoman explains.

What is a ceiling light?
A ceiling light is a type of light fixture (also known as a surface-mounted light). As the name suggests, because the upper part of the fixture is relatively flat and the base is installed completely against the ceiling, it is called a ceiling light. The light source can be an ordinary white bulb, fluorescent light, LED light, etc. At present, LED ceiling lights are the most popular on the market, and are often chosen for homes, offices and various other places.
Common ceiling lights include square-cover ceiling lights, round globe ceiling lights, pointed flat round ceiling lights, semi-spherical ceiling lights, semi-flat globe ceiling lights, small rectangular-cover ceiling lights and so on. Ceiling lights are suitable for lighting in living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms and other areas. Ceiling lights can be installed directly on the ceiling, are simple to install, and have a simple and elegant style that gives a space a clean and bright look.

Choosing ceiling lights for three main areas of the home
Living room ceiling lights
Because ceiling lights have a flat shape, they are very suitable for living rooms with a ceiling height lower than 2.8 metres, making the space look brighter and more generous. In general, for a 200-300 sq ft living room, you can choose a 60W white-light LED ceiling light to create a more spacious feel.

Bedroom ceiling lights
The main function of a bedroom is rest and sleep, so ceiling lights should be selected with a warm and romantic feel in mind. Especially in smaller bedrooms, using a ceiling light can enhance the visual effect. Compared with a chandelier, it feels less cumbersome and looks simpler.
Bathroom ceiling lights
Bathrooms are generally not very large, so they are also suitable for ceiling lights. However, because bathroom temperatures can be relatively high, you should pay attention to heat dissipation performance when choosing a ceiling light.
