Hotel Style: Create a Boutique Hotel Look Even in a Small Space

Many people enjoy staying in hotels, but hotel rooms are spacious and do not need much storage. So how can a typical 400 sq ft home create the interior design feel of a serviced apartment? Here are a few tips.

1. Hide Storage to Keep the Space Open

Serviced apartments place great emphasis on a sense of spaciousness, while many Hong Kong people tend to “build cabinets wherever there is space”. If you want to create a hotel style, you have to make some trade-offs. If storage is truly needed, try to conceal it as much as possible, such as by using a raised platform.

2. Avoid Overly Bright Lighting to Add Comfort

A hotel is a place for relaxation, so the lighting should not be too bright. Therefore, homes with more abundant natural light are more suitable. A dimmer ambience can also create a classy feel.

3. Use Open-plan Design to Unify the Flat

Open up the different zones as much as possible, or make good use of glass to separate spaces. The kitchen can also use an open-plan design to enhance the sense of space. Cabinets do not necessarily all need doors either.

4. Avoid Being Too Conventional and Add Character to the Flat

The refinement of a boutique hotel can be expressed through details. Do not be too conservative when choosing finishes, especially because after items are placed in the home, the textures of the finishes will be covered over large areas.

5. Find the Right Company

Some people give their favourite photos to design companies and ask them to “copy this”, but photos are often deceptive. Lighting effects and the sense of space do not necessarily reflect reality, and recreating the exact details in a photo requires repeated coordination between the design company and the factory. Otherwise, when the finished product is delivered, it is easy to find that although the design looks similar, the overall feel is “greatly downgraded”.

Below, you can refer to real completed photos of a flat of over 400 sq ft. If you are interested in finding/choosing a company that is good at hotel-style design, you can register through the platform, and a renovation consultant will match you with the most suitable company.
