4 Key Painting Points: A Painting Guide for Renovation Beginners

Painting works are a stage that most renovation projects must go through, but whether in choosing paint or carrying out the work, there are many areas where it is easy to get caught out. Today, the editor will introduce the points you need to pay attention to when it comes to paint.

Types of Paint

First, let us look at the categories of paint. Paint can mainly be divided into the following types.

Exterior Wall Paint
Exterior wall paint is generally divided into water-soluble paint and emulsion paint. Exterior emulsion paint is usually used on external walls, or in places with relatively high moisture such as bathrooms. Its main function is to decorate and protect the surface of a building, making the building’s exterior neat and attractive. It also has good water resistance and stain resistance, which can extend its service life.

Interior Wall Paint
Interior wall paint is a type of paint applied to indoor walls. The most common type is emulsion paint, and generally includes water-based interior wall paint, dry-powder interior wall paint, oil-based interior wall paint, water-based coatings, and other types.

Enamel Paint
Enamel paint uses varnish as its base material, with pigments added and ground into it. After the coating dries, it shows a glossy enamel-like colour, and the paint film is relatively hard. It is divided into phenolic enamel paint and alkyd enamel paint. Its characteristics include good gloss and improved heat resistance. It is mainly used on metal, wood, various vehicles, machinery, instruments, and marine steel components and vessels.

Wood Paint
Wood paint refers to a category of resin paint used on wooden products, and can be divided into water-based and oil-based types. By usage, it can also be divided into furniture paint and floor paint. This type of paint is characterised by relatively fast drying, high hardness, water resistance, wear resistance, convenient application, and a bright, full finish. If you want to add a protective layer to solid wood furniture or flooring that already has a beautiful natural colour, you can apply a coat of clear varnish.

Art Paint?
Strictly speaking, there is actually no such thing as art paint, because art paint is not a coating; it is mud-like in texture, so it cannot be considered paint and is more like a pigment. Art pigment cannot be applied with a paint brush. It can only be applied in a plastering method, using an art-pigment plastering trowel to spread the mud-like art pigment onto the wall.

Regarding the choice of paint, we interviewed Jeff Ho, Project Director of Apex Design, to understand what should be noted when selecting paint.

“Price is of course a major consideration when choosing paint. Take emulsion paint commonly used inside homes as an example: lower-priced emulsion paints usually have less protective film, and their VOC content may also be higher. But cheaper paint is not necessarily bad. When we are doing refurbishment work and only need to apply new paint over old paint, the protective film of the new paint may react with the protective film of the old paint, causing a peeling-like condition on the wall. Therefore, using a relatively inexpensive paint without a protective film is already sufficient. Of course, when painting a new flat, we would recommend using better-quality paint. Although these paints are more expensive, they also have many advantages. Apart from having lower VOC content and less impact on the human body, more importantly, these paints can achieve computer colour matching, making the finished colour closer to expectations. Of course, the choice of paint also requires the master worker to judge according to the actual site conditions. Therefore, during renovation works, homeowners should maintain good communication with the master worker at all times to ensure the project runs smoothly. At present, some engineering companies in the market have project supervisors who act as a communication bridge between renovation workers and homeowners. Engineering companies with such roles can help reduce conflicts between both parties, and homeowners’ requirements can also be expressed more clearly to the renovation workers, making the project smoother.”

Water-Based or Oil-Based?

So-called oil-based paint is actually a type of paint that contains more oil. With more oily substances, it can provide good decorative and protective effects, but other materials such as anti-rust paint and mixed paint are also added, causing oil-based paint to contain a large amount of harmful substances. The odour it emits is relatively strong and can have a certain degree of harm to the human body. In addition, oil-based paint must be diluted with thinner or turpentine, and contains a large amount of harmful substances and VOCs, affecting human health. The raw materials of water-based paint are different: not only does it not contain large amounts of oily materials, it specifically uses water as the diluent for water-based paint. It is non-toxic and harmless, will not cause harm to the body, and will not harm the environment. If homeowners pay close attention to the health of their home environment, water-based paint is more recommended.

Painting Procedures

When painting works are being carried out, workers may sometimes simplify the process according to the situation. However, if you want the paint to remain durable, there is actually a set of proper procedures to follow.

Before painting works begin, the existing surface must first be scraped off, and then skim coating should be applied. Most workers use vegetable glue and whiting powder for skim coating because the cost is relatively low. However, because it contains organic components, mould can easily appear. In fact, the proper method is to use wall putty for skim coating. Wall putty is ready to use once opened, and it is made with eco-friendly ingredients that can effectively prevent mould. However, because wall putty is relatively hard, more force is needed when applying it to the wall.

After skim coating is completed, paint can be applied. In general, workers will apply varnish or sealer before skim coating, and then apply three coats of emulsion paint directly after skim coating. However, after the skim coating work is completed, the “one primer, two topcoats” method should be used, meaning one coat of primer and two coats of emulsion paint. Reasons for using primer include rust prevention, moisture prevention, increasing the adhesion of the topcoat, and preventing chemical substances in the wall from eating into the topcoat. It is generally recommended for painting works.

Painting DIY Advice for Beginners

Preparation
1. Painting tools - roller tray, roller (for large areas), paint bucket, paint brush (for wall corners and small areas), container for mixing paint (note that oil-based paint may corrode ordinary household plastic basins)
2. Protective tools - prepare masking tape, old newspapers or similar items, and lay them on the floor and furniture in advance
3. Paint - choose the colour you want; most paint shops can now mix colours

During the Works
1. Try to choose weather that is well ventilated and dry for the work, as humidity and ventilation will affect the quality of the work.
2. If there are problems such as mouldy walls, water seepage, or uneven surfaces, they must be dealt with before painting procedures can begin.
3. When painting an entire room, the recommended order is: ceiling→walls→window frames and door frames→doors→floor.
4. During application, stir the paint until it is completely even, and remember to keep stirring the paint throughout the work.
5. It is recommended to wear clothes that you are prepared to throw away when carrying out the work. If paint really drips onto your body, you can wipe it off with clean water before the paint has fully dried.
6. When brushing a wall with a paint brush, try to keep painting repeatedly up, down, left and right in alternating strokes. Although your hand may get rather tired, this can make the paint coverage more even. If using a sponge roller, make sure the roller surface is evenly coated with paint, and roll up, down, left and right at a slow, even speed.

Paint affects the appearance of the walls at home, and also affects the overall style of the home. Therefore, everyone must clearly understand the characteristics of each type of paint and the application procedures before the work begins, so as to ensure that after renovation, you can have a perfect home.
