Interior Design: Unconstrained Eclecticism

Posted System 16/10/2019 0 Comment(s) 裝修專欄,

Eclectic Style is translated as an eclectic approach to interior design. From an artistic perspective, it refers to borrowing different images and characteristics from other artists' works, blending these different elements and evolving them into a new idea. Simply put, it is Mix and Match.

Taking the best elements and features of different design styles as a resource, then blending and evolving them into a brand-new look and a unique new work, can be called Eclectic Style.

For example, French country style, Asian style and Scandinavian style can be combined to become a unique style. Or, for instance, using modern style as a base and adding vintage elements to form a distinctive new style that has not yet been named can also be called an eclectic interior design style.

The Key to Eclecticism

There is a method to Eclectic design. It is not simply a matter of casually mixing things together; if so, it can only be called copying. Eclectic interior design basically requires a sense of unity, with various elements added according to this principle.

One way to maintain a sense of unity is through colour. Wood and plastic can also be mixed together, as long as their colours can meet the basic condition of unity. Conversely, if the colours are not unified, then start with the materials and styles of the furniture. If it is just a messy mix without a match, it will not achieve the Eclectic effect.

Theme Colour

Because this is free matching, it can in fact be a colour party with a vintage look, but Eclectic styles are generally relatively understated. If you do not want a colourful scene, first set a theme colour, such as blue, then think about how to complement blue. White and black are versatile, but contrasting colours in colour theory may work even better, and the contrasting colour of blue is yellow. Making good use of contrasting colours can make the visual effect more layered and lively.

Another way to decide on a theme colour is to choose a neutral tone as the base colour, then select brighter tones as accents. There can be more than one accent colour.

Keep Walls as Simple as Possible

Simply painted walls may be the best choice for Eclectic style. Although there are exceptions, most designers prefer to have a simple background and use it as a starting point for adding different elements, just like painting a picture. Conversely, when walls use elaborate patterns or colours, they can look a little chaotic, making it difficult to add distinctive elements. Even if such elements are added, they may be overshadowed by the background, or may only make the overall visual effect even more cluttered. However, this can still be considered Eclectic style. After all, no one stipulates that this design style must be simple and comfortable, so it can also be rich in colour.

Tips for Choosing Furniture

Mix freely without restrictions, but remember not to make it messy. The size, materials, colours and styles of the furniture should preferably create a sense of unity. For example, two stools with similar styles can be a good match even if their colours are very different, as long as the styles feel unified. It is just like matching clothes; people who are good at fashion should find it easy.

Tips for Matching

While strictly following the principle of colour tones, you can express yourself freely and create different forms of matching. It could be two completely different patterns that share similar colours, or two sofas in different colours but the same style, and so on. This requires a little thought and taste. How would you choose the most exciting combination? It may be the result of repeated attempts and imagination.

Objects with a Strong Presence

If you find the space rather dull, you can use this quickest way to attract attention: add objects with a strong presence, such as a wall covered with pictures or photographs, a substantial piece of artwork, an exquisite screen, and so on. Objects with a strong presence have a distinctive character and show the owner's personality, but it is not advisable to add too many. If there are too many, the focus will become scattered, and special items will become less special.

Summary

The appeal of Eclectic style is that it is highly flexible, free and full of room for creativity, making it very interesting. Another way to explain it is that this is a decorating style that simply lets you express yourself, emphasising your own personality and preferences. Eclectic style should not be restricted. Do whatever you want! Do not be bound by all kinds of so-called interior design styles. With an excited mindset, enjoy creating your own world!
